Združba malega jesena in črnega gabra je aconalna gozdna združba in jo najdemo v alpske območju. Naseljuje izrazito prisojna strma pobočja do nadmorske višine okoli 1000 m. Če združbo primerjamo z združbo črnega bora in malega jesena, lahko ugotovimo, da ima slednja nekoliko težje ekološke razmere. Skladno s tem je bolj vezana na subatlantsko podnebje in se proti severu areala umika v zavetrne lege. Na dolomitih in dolomitnih apnencih so plitve do srednje globoke zelo skeletne rendzine s pretežno prhninastim humusom.

Diagnostična kombinacija rastlinskih vrst
Drevesna plast: črni gaber (Ostrya carpinifolia), mali jesen (Fraxinus ornus).
Grmovna plast: Amelanchier ovalis, Erica carnea.
Zeliščna plast: Buphthalmum salicifolium, Calamagrostis varia, Carex humilis, Polygala chamaebuxus, Euphorbia cyparissias, Peucedanum oreoselinum, Polygonatum odoratum, Teucrium chamaedrys, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria.

Gozdovi združbe so vezani na ekstremne ekološke razmere. Na izrazito strmih prisojnih pobočjih je združba trajeni stadij, v ugodnejših ekoloških razmerah je možna sukcesija v smeri termofilnega bukovega gozda. V pašnih gozdovih popolnoma prevlada črni gaber. Čim bolj so ekološke razmere ekstremne, toliko pomembnejša je njihova varovalna vloga.

Združbo črnega gabra in malega jesena uvrščamo v zvezo Fraxino orni-Ostryion carpinifoliae.

The Ostryo–Fraxinetum orni is an azonal forest association; it is found in the Alpine region of Slovenia. It grows on the excessively sunny sides of steep slopes at an altitude of around 1,000 meters. Compared to the association Fraxino orni–Pinetum nigrae, the ecological conditions are more severe. Accordingly, it is attracted more to the subatlantic climate, and in the northern part of the distribution area, it seeks locations protected from the wind. On dolomite and dolomite limestone there are shallow to medium deep skeletal rendzic Leptosols with prevailing moder humus.

Tree layer: Ostrya carpinifolia, Fraxinus ornus.
Shrub layer: Amelanchier ovalis, Erica carnea.
Herb layer: Buphthalmum salicifolium, Calamagrostis varia, Carex humilis, Polygala chamaebuxus, Euphorbia cyparissias, Peucedanum oreoselinum, Polygonatum odoratum, Teucrium chamaedrys, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria.

The forests of this association grow in extreme ecological conditions. On the excessively sunny steep slopes, the association has the character of a permanent stadium. However, under more favourable conditions, successive development in the direction of thermophilous beech forest is possible. In grazing forests, the Ostrya carpinifolia predominates. The more extreme the conditions are, the more important their protective role is.

The Ostryo carpinifoliae–Fraxinetum orni is classified in the alliance Fraxino orni–Ostryion carpinifoliae.
