DINARSKA ZDRUŽBA RUŠJA
Pinetum mugo croaticum Ht. 1938
The Dinaric association of dwarf mountain pine (Pinus mugo) is a zonal association of the Dinaric Alps growing at altitudes between 1,550 and 1,750 meters directly above the forest border formed by subalpine beech forest. On these sites, there are severe ecological conditions including a short vegetation period with a high day-night temperature oscillation and thick blankets of snow. Only weather-beaten and flexible dwarf mountain pine can thrive on these sites. The individual beech and larch trees that grow here have a similar appearance. Diagnostic combination of plant species The thick growth of weather-beaten dwarf pines reaching a height of two or three meters that constitute this association is almost impassable. The association plays an important protective role in protecting lower forest areas by retaining moisture and preventing soil erosion. The Pinetum mugi croaticum is classified in the alliance Erico–Pinion mugi. |
